Choosing Your Car Accessories Wisely

When you buy a new car, it’s tempting to go all out and buy all sorts of accessories to add a personalized touch, making the car truly yours. Accessories can offer a lot of convenience, but unless you’re going to be making frequent and practical use of them, then they can just be a money drain. Adding too many accessories to your car can even reduce your gas mileage. The next time you find a car accessory you want, stop and consider these points before you buy.

Practicality
Ask yourselfwhat you want the accessory for, then ask yourself how much you’ll actually need it. Granted, there are some that are only genuinely useful at certain times of the year, like 4×4 accessories. However, you shouldn’t go sinking money into something like rooftop storage containers unless you’ll be traveling often. Otherwise, it just sits on your car where it disturbs the aerodynamic design and reduces gas efficiency. It’s not financially sound to essentially continue paying for your barely-used accessories in the form of wasted gasoline.

Ease of Installation
A lot of people who enjoy accessorizing their vehicles often want to do the installation themselves. This can present a problem with accessories that require special knowledge of electronics and automotive wiring. Things like car alarms, stereo systems, hydraulics and 4wd accessories have complex instructions and may take even a trained professional hours or days to install. If you can’t do it yourself, it will cost a lot more to have someone else do it.

Aesthetics
There are many accessories that are meant to beautify and personalize your car. However, things like different colored lights can be a risky purchase. In a lot of states, there are laws prohibiting the use of any color of lights other than the standard red, white and yellow. These laws tend to vary by city and violation is more severely punished in some places than others. Normally, the most you will get is a ticket and an order to remove the offending lights.
